PETERSEN MEDIA- Using the momentum from a strong California Speedweek finale a couple of weeks back, Richard Vander Weerd was back to form at the Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night where he picked up a second place finish after a hard fought battle with Austin Williams.
“We had a good qualifying lap, and we ended up on the pole of the feature event,” Vander Weerd said. “We had a good car but I pushed myself a little too hard and opened the door for Austin Williams.”
With 29 cars on hand for the Glenn Howard Classic, Vander Weerd timed his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in eighth fastest, before scoring a second place finish during his heat race.
With a couple of cars failing to transfer out of their heats, the Visalia, CA driver would find himself on the pole of the 30-lap A Main event.
Getting the jump when the green flag was displayed to the field, Vander Weerd quickly jumped out to the lead as he worked the bottom of the ½ mile speedway. W
Continuing to work the bottom of the speedway, Vander Weerd would admittedly push a little to hard on the fifth lap and his car would drift up the track enough to allow Austin Williams to take command of the race.
Hanging right with Williams for the duration of the race, a late race caution would give Vander Weerd one final restart to try and sneak away with his fourth win of the season.
When the race came back to life, Vander Weerd would take a couple of shots, but it would not work out for him as he would finish in the second spot.
“It was a good night overall for our team, and we had a car that should have won the race,” Vander Weerd added. “I made a mistake and we ended up in second. Thanks to my guys for a good car.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
