PETERSEN MEDIA- Willie Croft teamed with McColloch Motorsports over the weekend and headed to the Ocean Speedway and took part in the 55th Annual Johnny Key Classic; where contact late in the race would sideline Croft.
“I really have to thank the McColloch family for giving me the chance to race over the weekend,” Croft said. “They had not ran their car all year, so we had some things to work out, but I think we got better each time we hit the track.”
Timing the McColloch’s RV Repair and Storage No. 17 machine in 16th fastest, Croft would finish in the third and final transfer spot in his heat race, and earn a spot in the 50-lap feature event.
Lining up in the eighth row on what was a slick racing surface, the Sacramento, CA driver would search around the Ocean Speedway looking for open real estate, as he found himself in the 13th spot when the race’s first caution flew.
Following the first caution, the race would then get into a pattern of cautions, and green flag action would be stop and go as the 2014 Trophy Cup champion continued to run just outside of the Top-10.
Getting turned around on lap 23, Croft and his McColloch Motorsports team would go to work during the intermission to see what they could do for the final 25-lap segment.
From the back of the pack, Croft would have a very nice start, as he would get back up into the 11th spot before the first caution of the second segment flew, again nine laps in the run.
Battling for a spot in the Top-10 on a rubber down track, Croft would loop his machine on the 42nd lap, and contact from another driver would cause damage to the front of his machine, and his night would come to a close.
“We got going pretty good in the final segment, but the throttle started hanging a little and it started to mess with my corner entry,” Croft said. “I tried to ride it out, but unfortunately I couldn’t hang on, and some contact really did us in. Again, I really have to thank Nick and Kerry McColloch for making the trip down, and having me drive.”
Willie Croft Racing would like to thank Holey Smokes BBQ, ButlerBuilt , Brown and Miller, FK Rod Ends, Hinchman Indy, Schoenfeld, K&N, Smith Precision Products, Kaeding Performance, Dan Olson Products, Vortex Wings, Amerikote, and GUTS for their support in 2015.
