PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to the seat of his own Willie Croft Racing No. 29 entry on Saturday night, Willie Croft took part in the inaugural Dave Helm Classic at Keller Auto Speedway and had a good night going until a pre-race decision ultimately soured his night.
“We actually had a ton of speed all night, and I felt really good,” Willie Croft said. “I tried something in the feature event with our Jacob’s Ladder and it didn’t go well. It was something I had been wanting to try, it didn’t work, and now I know better.”
Running an Australian style format with two heat races taking the place of time trials, Croft would get off to a nice start as he picked up a second-place finish in his first heat aboard the Holey Smokes BBQ/Rudeen/Art’s Craft Beer Palace backed entry.
The second round of heat races saw the Colfax, CA driver again pick up a second-place finish which set him up nicely for the Dash and feature event.
Racing to a sixth-place finish in the Dash, Croft would grid the field from the third row for the 30-lap Dave Helm Classic feature event.
Watching the track during Midget and Non Wing action, Croft would make the decision to try something on his machine for the feature event.
When the 30-lap affair came to life, Croft was able to work his way into the fifth position, before having some issues that saw him draft back to 10th. With his entry a bit of a handful, he would work back into the eighth position, and would then lose a few spots again as he would fall back to 11th.
Finally on the 17th lap things had become a little more difficult and Croft made the decision to pull his machine back to the pit area.
“I should have known better, and the decision really threw the entire balance of the car off,” Croft added. “I take the blame, and definitely learned my lesson. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible.”
