PETERSEN MEDIA- For the first time in Louie Vermeil Classic history, the King of the West Sprint Car Series was a part of the action at Calistoga Speedway, and Willie Croft made the most of the chance to compete at the event as he tallied a very strong second place finish on Saturday night before fighting some adversity to finish 10th during Sunday’s finale.
“I just have to thank my guys for busting their butt’s all weekend long,” Croft said. “Saturday went really well, but Sunday we had to change an engine after hot laps, miss qualifying and really do it all the hard way.”
Timing the Holey Smokes BBQ/ButlerBuild/Brown and Miller backed No. 29 machine in second quickest in qualifying time trials to open the weekend on Saturday night, Croft would power from fourth to finish second in his heat race. Advancing into the Dash, Croft’s third place finish would put him in the second row for the 25-lap feature event.
On a slick Calistoga Speedway surface, Croft would find himself in close knit battles with the likes of Ryan Bernal and Dominic Scelzi as they all chased after that coveted ‘Louie’.
Battling hard inside the Top-5, Croft would make a couple of late moves to work his way up to second as he got his weekend off to a great start.
Sunday night’s Louie Vermeil Classic finale got off to a tough start for Croft and company as issue arose in hot laps that forced the team to go to a back up engine. Making the change and missing time trials completely, Croft would line up scratch on the field in heat race competition.
Racing to a fifth place finish, Croft and company would go to work on their car for the feature event as the Roseville, CA driver would roll off the starting grid from the 20th starting position.
On a wide surface following the USAC/CRA feature event, Croft would go to work form the tail end of the field as he looked to have a very strong mount underneath him. Able to make serious headway over the course of the main event, Croft would cap a nice charge as he finished 10th to close the weekend out.
“I just have to thank everyone who helps us out and who helped us out over the weekend,” Croft said. “Looking forward to some fun races coming up.”
