Tanner Carrick Hard Charges at HK Classic
PETERSEN MEDIA: Heading to Watsonville, CA over the weekend to take part in the Howard Kaeding Classic, Tanner Carrick hard charged to a 13th place finish on Friday before finishing ninth on Saturday night in NARC action as well as a runner up finish in Western Midget Racing competition.
“Unfortunately, Friday night we lost a motor in time trials and we ended up missing our heat race and tagging the back of the feature,” Carrick said. “Big thanks to my guys for their hard work and still giving me a good car despite not having much track time.”
Getting the weekend underway on Friday night, Carrick timed the CVC/Cemex/TC Guide Service backed No. 83T in 13thquickest in time trials but had a motor expiring as he ended his qualifying run.
With the team going to work to make the swap, the missed their heat race, but with the car count were still able to start 24th in the feature event. Making the necessary changes, Carrick and company had their car ready for the feature event.
Taking the green flag from the 24th starting position, Carrick was able to begin moving forward as soon as the action came to life. Jumping into 22nd on the opening lap, Carrick was up into 20th by the 10th circuit.
Continuing to slowly work his way towards the Top-10, Carrick moved into 18th on the 13th lap, and was up into 16thwhen the race reached the halfway point. Falling back to 17th on the 20th lap, Carrick was able to move into 15th with just five laps to go, and then slipped into 12th.
In a battle for 12th and 13th in the final laps, Carrick settled for 13th and earned the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger for his performance.
Back in action on Saturday night for the finale, Carrick got the night underway by timing in 13th in qualifying time trials and then picked up a sixth-place finish in his heat race.
Moving into the 30-lap finale, Carrick took the green flag from the 16th starting position. Working his way into 10th on the third lap, issues with the lead duo put him up into eighth on a lap five restart.
Getting as high as sixth as the action resumed, Carrick slipped back to ninth on the 12th lap, and then found himself back in 10th at the halfway point. Continuing to battle on the slick Watsonville Speedway surface, Carrick moved back into ninth on the 23rd lap, and went on to close his weekend out with a ninth-place finish.
Saturday night also saw Carrick pilot a Matt Streeter owned midget in Western Midget Racing action. Timing in second fastest in qualifying, Carrick charged from sixth to second in his heat race and then had a nice run from fifth to second in the feature event.
