Chiaramonte Charges to 6th at Watsonville Speedway
PETERSEN MEDIA: Slated for a winged doubleheader over the weekend, Mother Nature had other ideas, but Braden Chiaramonte was still able to get one night of action in as he tallied a sixth-place finish on Friday night.
“We had a really fast car on Friday night in Watsonville, CA, but a fuel issue in qualifying put us behind early,” Braden Chiaramonte said. “Luckily, we were able to get it fixed and I was really happy with how we raced. “
Checking in at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on Friday night, Chiaramonte fought early gremlins as he ended up 13th fastest in qualifying time trials.
Able to get their fuel issues rectified, the El Cajon, CA runner lined up fifth in heat race action. With passing at a premium for everyone early in the night, Chiaramonte finished fifth and found himself in the seventh row to start the 25-lap feature event.
As the green flag was displayed to the field, Chiaramonte battled between 12th and 13th for the first six laps before he used a lap seven restart to power into 11th. Once in 11th, Chiaramonte then went to work on garnering a position in the Top-10 where he then battled for 10th until he secured the position on the 10th lap.
With each passing lap, Chiaramonte continued to gain strength as he moved into 9th on the 11th lap where he settled in for the next eight circuits.
Continuing to battle hard on the ¼ mile bullring, Chiaramonte made a big move to get into seventh on the 21st lap and then was able to take the sixth spot on the race’s final lap.
Feeling good about how his night ended, the team traveled to Merced Speedway on Saturday night where rain after time trials canceled the rest of the race.
“It was definitely a bummer that we had those early issues, because I think we had a good enough car to run up front if we could have started a few rows better,” he added. “Looking forward to getting up to Placerville Speedway this weekend for their two-day show.”
BY THE NUMBERS: Starts- 6, Wins- 0, Top 5’s- 1, Top 10’s- 3
ON TAP: Chiaramonte is now slated to do double-duty this Friday and Saturday night at Placerville Speedway where he will run his winged 360ci as well as run with the USCS non-winged series.
