James McFadden Third at Super Dirt Cup
PETERSEN MEDIA- Following an extremely successful NARC Speedweek, James McFadden and the Tarlton Motorsports team went through a bit of adversity during the Super Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway, but in the end the team landed on the podium and finished third in the Saturday night finale.
With the Super Dirt Cup kicking off on Thursday night, McFadden got off to a tricky start as he timed the Tarlton and Son Inc./American Rock and Rent/Executive Auto Sales backed No. 21 in 26th fastest in time trials.
Predicated on event points all week long, McFadden lined up in the second row of his heat race where his second place finish put him on the front row of the night’s ‘B’ Main once heat and qualifying points were tallied.
Getting the jump in the ‘B’, JMAC was able to race his way to the win and punch his ticket into the feature event where he lined the Tarlton Motorsports entry up in the 21st starting position.
Slowly working his way forward as he used the bottom groove of the track, McFadden and another car got together and it resulted in him getting upside down and being forced to the work area on the fifth lap.
Getting what they could repaired and getting McFadden back on track to try and obtain as many points as possible with a very battered car, McFadden restarted the race but got upside down for a second time on the 15th lap and brought his night to a close.
Pulling down a spare car and getting everything in order for the second night of action, McFadden got off to a better start as he timed in 14th fastest in qualifying time trials before charging from sixth to third in his heat race.
A much better point total on this night lined the Australian National Titlist up in the second row of the 30-lap feature event.
Getting a great jump when the green flag flew, McFadden powered his way into second and quickly began his pursuit of Jason Solwold. On the seventh lap, Solwold got tight in turns three and four, and McFadden was there to pounce as he powered into the lead and looked very strong out front.
Setting a very solid pace, McFadden’s lead was getting cut into in the closing laps and Solwold made the bottom groove work.
Getting into traffic, a late restart allowed McFadden to take Solwold’s line away but behind the lead duo’s battle third running Justin Sanders was building momentum.
As McFadden got away from Solwold, Sanders was able to move into second with just two laps left in the race and was closing quickly.
On the race’s final lap, Sanders was able to get around McFadden in turns one and two, and unable to answer in three and four McFadden settled for a second place finish.
Sitting 15th in points after two night’s, McFadden and company returned to the Super Dirt Cup finale on Saturday night still with an opportunity to lock into the Dash as he started third in his qualifier.
When his qualifier hit the track, each of the front row starters botched the start and ultimately J-Mac found himself on the front row.
Getting the jump over Sye Lynch, McFadden went on to lead every lap and not only punch his ticket into the 40-lap feature event it also locked him into the pole shuffle and guaranteed himself a top-eight starting position.
Pulling the seven, McFadden went on quite the rampage in the shuffle. Winning each battle, McFadden advanced to the final where he took on Trey Starks for the right to lead the field to green, only to run out of fuel coming to the green.
Lining up on the front row of the $100,026.26-to-win feature event, McFadden slipped to third when the race came to life as he chased after Trey Starks and Tanner Holmes.
In a fast paced feature event on a very fast surface, McFadden was able to close in on the lead duo a few times in traffic, but could never get close enough to make a bid for the top spot.
When the checkered flag flew on the race, McFadden capped the week off on the podium as he finished third.
