Tony Gomes 2nd at Placerville
PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to weekly action at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night as the track’s most recent winner, Tony Gomes made a charge towards his second consecutive win but ultimately finished in the runner up spot.
“We had really good car speed again at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, I just couldn’t quite make a move stick to get the win,” Tony Gomes said. “We really have been good and I hope we can continue that this week on King’s Meat night.”
With 23 cars in the pit area on what was Fan Appreciation night at the track, Gomes timed the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7c entry in sixth fastest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, Gomes took care of the task at hand as he powered the win, which was vital as it placed him in the nightly redraw to determine the first four row of the feature event starting line up.
Pulling the five pill, Gomes rolled off the starting grid from the inside of the third row to kick off the 25-lapper. When the feature event went green, the Modesto, CA driver took the fourth spot where he settled in for the opening laps.
As the laps clicked off, Gomes started to pick his spots as he used a restart on the 9th lap to move into second before making a bid for the top spot on the 10th lap.
Making a move to slide up in front of Andy Forsberg, Gomes was unable to clear his competitor as he settled back into second and kept him in his sights.
A late restart saw Gomes give up the second position briefly as he fell back to third, but in the closing laps he was able to move back into the runner up position where he went on to finish.
“It is great to get Cody and Mandi another top finish at Placerville Speedway and I really appreciate them continuing to support my racing efforts,” Gomes said. “I also want to thank Cody, Bobby, John, Cody Cook, and Christopher Bouchard for their hard work in the pits all night long.”
