Spencer Bayston So Close at Roth Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA- Wrapping up a three-race stint with Tarlton Motorsports during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series’ CA swing, Spencer Bayston saved his best for last as he nearly used last lap heroics to win the Dennis Roth Classic only to come .021 seconds short as he ran second.

“Anytime you get the chance to run with the Tarlton Motorsports group you know it’s going to be a good trip,” Spencer Bayston said. “It was great to unload with speed every time we hit the track, and it was great to finish with a strong run on Saturday night.”

Checking in at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA on Saturday night for the Dennis Roth Classic, Bayston got the night off to a great start as he timed the Tarlton and Son Inc./American Rock and Rent/Executive Auto Sales backed No. 21 in second fastest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the Lebanon, IN driver mashed the throttle when the green flag was displayed and quickly jumped out into the lead. Leading from green the checkered, Bayston’s win not only locked him into the $83,000-to-win feature event, it also put him in the all important Dash.

Pulling the three in the redraw, Bayston was able to gain a spot and improve his starting a position by a row as his second place finish put him on the front row of the ‘A’ alongside Kaleb Montgomery.

When the feature came to life, Bayston settled into third as he chased after the lead duo of Montgomery and Corey Day. Looking strong in third, a restart on the 13th lap saw David Gravel get by and put him back in fourth.

A restart on the 18th lap saw the leaders get together, and Bayston was able to dart to the lead, however the caution flew and put him in second as David Gravel found himself out front.

When the action restarted Gravel paced the field though Bayston didn’t let him out of his sights. Though Gravel did create a bit of a gap, Bayston seemingly saved his best for the last laps as he closed in with five to go, and made things exciting up front.

As the two raced through traffic, Bayston was all over Gravel as the white flag flew. Getting into the wall a bit in turns one and two, Bayston made a massive recovery down the back stretch and used a full head of steam to pull alongside Gravel as they raced through three and four.

In a drag race coming to the checkered, Gravel was barely able to fend Bayston off as he came up just short of the massive win and fell just .021 seconds short of the big pay day.

“It really is a testament to the program that (crew chief) Drew Warner runs with the ability to get myself comfortable that quick and to be able to contend with the best cars in the country. I really want to thank the entire Tarlton family as well as everyone associated with Tarlton Motorsports for having me out to drive for them.”

Tarlton Motorsports would like to thank Tarlton and Son Inc., American Rock and Rent, Executive Auto Sales, Durst, Tarlton Estate and Asset Management, Bandy and Associates, FK Shocks, FK Rod Ends, Willwood Brakes, Vortex Wings, and High Performance Lubricants for their support.
