Colby Copeland and C&M Motorsports Win ‘The Louie’
PETERSEN MEDIA- Traveling to Calistoga Speedway over the weekend for the Louie Vermeil Classic, Colby Copeland and his C&M Motorsports team celebrated a big victory on Sunday night after a fourth-place finish on Saturday.
“Saturday night we didn’t get our weekend off to a great start, but we worked hard on our car and by Sunday we were really good,” Colby Copeland said. “It is really cool to win another Louie for myself and get the C&M Motorsports team their first.”
Saturday night the weekend got started with Copeland timing the NOS Energy Drink/Lund Construction/Anrak backed No. 7c, 13th fastest in qualifying time trials.
A dicey start to the heat race saw Copeland eventually come to a stop in turns one and two before restarting at the tail end of the field. When the heat made its second start attempt, Copeland got a great jump as he quickly began working his way forward.
Getting into fifth, Copeland took advantage of Bubba DeCaires getting out of shape in front of him as he took over the fourth spot in the closing laps. With his run to fourth, Copeland improved his feature event starting position drastically as he took the green flag from the seventh starting position.
After an extensive track prep session, Copeland and the rest of the field took the green for the 25-lapper and Copeland again started to do what many struggled to do and that was pass cars.
Slowly working his way forward, Copeland got up to fourth as he chased after the likes of Joel Myers Jr who ran just ahead of him as well as the lead duo of Justyn Cox and Shane Golobic.
Unable to crack a spot on the podium, Copeland closed the opening night out with a fourth-place finish.
Back in action for Sunday night’s finale, the Roseville, CA driver got off to a red-hot start as he timed in third fastest in qualifying before running away with a heat race win.
Drawing the one in the redraw, Copeland led the field to green alongside Caden Steele.
When the green flag flew, it was Steele getting the jump as Copeland slipped back to second and began his pursuit for the top spot. Fending off an early challenge for second, Copeland was able to reel Steele in and make his winning move on the 18th lap. Jumping into the lead, Copeland was able to comfortably race his way to the win and score his first win with C&M Motorsports which also gave the team their first ever ‘Louie’.
“I really want to thank Cody and Bobby for all of their hard work,” Copeland added. “By the end of the weekend I felt like we were slot car racing and I hardly had to move my hands. We got better and better, and we were really good when it mattered most.”
