“Trophy Cup is a unique event, and a fun event as well,” Joel Myers Jr said. “We had a pretty eventful weekend, and came so close to making the Saturday night feature, the chips didn’t fall our way.”
Drawing an early pill on Thursday, Myers Jr knew the importance of the first night as it meant he would time in nearly last on Friday night with the unique Trophy Cup format.
Timing the All About Fire Protection/Hi-Plains Building Division/DirtDudes Excavating backed No. 46JR in 21st fastest in his flight which put him on the front row of his heat race.
Needing to pick up the win to lock into the opening night feature event, Myers Jr was hard on the throttle as the first heat of the week went green. Jumping out to the early lead, the youngster from Sebastopol, CA never looked back as he led from start to finish and did all he could do to earn points in the event .
Locked into the ‘A’, Myers Jr did have a tall order in front of him as he found himself 22nd on the starting grid. With the track very dominant around the top it proved to be tough to mount a charge through the field.
When the checkered flag flew on the feature, Myers Jr was in the 19th position and sat 20th overall in Trophy Cup points with an opportunity to better himself on Friday night.
With qualifying inverted from Thursday’s order, Myers Jr went out nearly last in his flight and timed in 19th quickest which again put him on the front row of his heat race.
From the outside of the front row, Myers Jr did not get the same jump as he did on Thursday night and now needed to find a way to the front to lock into the feature. Amidst his efforts, he slipped back to finish fourth which put him in the fifth row of the first 20-lap ‘B’ of the night.
Picking up a couple of positions in the semi, Friday night ended with an eighth place finish which meant Myers would use his Thursday night prelim points heading into Saturday which put him 31st overall with 65 cars entered into the event.
Lining up 4th in his heat race on Saturday night, there were no transfer positions up for grabs, rather an opportunity to earn more points which lined up the main events.
Getting upside down in his heat, Myers Jr was able to make repairs but started back in 12th for the 25-lap semi with just four positions into the feature event up for grabs.
Needing to make some big moves for a shot in the 50-lap feature, Myers Jr showed tremendous speed as he worked his way through the field. Quickly racing into the Top-10, Myers Jr was into fifth on the ninth lap and a legitimate player to earn a feature event starting spot.
Getting into third, a yellow flew and put right outside of the transfer for the ensuing restart. A big move when the action resume saw him power his way into third, but the following lap and slight misstep saw him slip back to fifth.
In fifth and on the outside looking in, Myers Jr started to slip back as he dealt with failing rear suspension on his JMR no. 46JR mount. Limping home the final few laps, Myers Jr capped his Trophy Cup off with an eighth-place finish in the semi.
“We really had a something there in that Saturday night ‘B’, and I wish we could have held on to make the show,” Myers Jr noted. “It was a fun weekend, a lot of action, and I am very thankful for all of the people that helped our team out and continue to support us.”
