Late Race Contact Dashes Justin Sanders’ Hard Charge in Merced, CA
PETERSEN MEDIA- Back aboard the Dale Miller owned No. 4SA on Saturday night in Merced, CA for Sprint Car Challenge Tour action, Justin Sanders valiant charge was all for not as contact late in the race sent him upside down after racing into the Top-5 after coming from the middle of the ‘B’ Main.
“The track was really slick and tough to grab ahold of early in the night and we didn’t get timed in well at all,” Justin Sanders said. “It put us in a pretty deep hole and we were able to climb out of it and race into the feature, but we endured some contact and went for a ride in the feature and ended what was a pretty good recover for our team.”
43 cars embarked on Merced Speedway on Saturday night for Sprint Car Challenge Tour action, and Sanders timed in 13th fastest in his qualifying flight which resulted in him lining up in the fourth row of his heat race.
After finishing seventh in his heat, Sanders still had a mountain to climb to make the feature through the ‘B’, as he lined up in the eighth starting position aboard the Anrak/Thompson’s Family of Dealerships/Yuba Sutter Aviation backed No. 4SA.
With the track coming back to life in the semi, Sanders was able to keep his nose clean as he methodically picked off cars in the semi, and worked his way into a transfer position as time ran out.
Able to pick up a couple of ‘insurance’ spots, Sanders finished second and was safely in the 11th row of the 35-lap feature event.
Continuing to show a ton of speed just as he did in the semi, Sanders was back up on the wheel when the feature event went green. Cracking the Top-15 in just three laps, Sanders worked his way into the Top-10 just prior to the race’s halfway point as he got stronger as the pre-race track prep wore off.
Into eight on the 18th lap, Sanders continued to work the bullring as he raced into the fifth spot with 10-to-go. Looking like he was on his way to a Top-5 after lining up in the middle of the ‘B’, contact on the 32nd lap from DJ Netto sent the Aromas, CA driver for a wild ride off of turn four and it brought his night to an end.
“Unfortunately it was one of those moves where I didn’t have much of chance to play any defense,’ Justin Sanders said. “I hate it for Dale Miller and our supporters because it was hard work to bounce back like we did.”
