Late Miscue Dashes Gomes’ Hopes of Top Finish with SCCT

PETERSEN MEDIA- Tony Gomes and the C&M Motorsports team had a great night going on Saturday night until a late race miscue saw Gomes take a big flip down the backstretch during the opening night of action with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.

“For the second week in a row we had a great night going and nothing to show for it,” Tony Gomes said. “Unfortunately I made a mistake in traffic late in the race and proved to be costly and it set me for a big ride while running in the third spot. I hate it for everyone involved on this race team.”

Taking part in the opening round of action with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, Gomes topped the field of 41 cars in time trials as he eared quick time honors and lined up in the second row of his heat race.

Needing to simply finish in the Top-5 to earn a spot in the redraw, the Modesto, CA driver did just that as his third place finish locked the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rodes backed No. 7c in both the Dash and the feature event.

After lining up sixth in the Dash based on the redraw, Gomes picked up a pair of positions as a fourth place finish improved his feature event starting position by a full row as he took the green flag outside of row two.

Settling into fourth as the feature event came to life, Gomes worked hard on the bullring as he battled with some of the region’s top drivers who assembled at the bullring.

Working into third on the 14th lap, Gomes began to chase after Andy Forsberg and Shane Golobic who raced hard and battled through dense traffic. Continuing to battle in traffic, Gomes kept the lead duo in his sights as the leaders continued to put cars a lap down.

On the 31st lap things took a drastic turn for Gomes and C&M Motorsports. Getting his right rear over the edge of the speedway exiting turn two while working through traffic, Gomes clipped the entry to the track’s exit ramp in the middle of the back stretch and it resulted in him taking a big flip.

Though he was able to climb out of the wreckage unscathed, his night came to an abrupt end.

“Just a game of inches so to speak,” a disappointed Gomes added. “I just hit the exit at the wrong angle and it hung the right rear over the edge and as I got it gathered up we got sucked into the exit ramp and off it went. I’m thankful all of our parts and safety gear did their job, and I am thankful to this team for continuing to support me.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
