Paul Nienhiser 2nd at The Hill Raceway
PETERSEN MEDIA: Making his way to the state of Wisconsin over the weekend for a pair of IRA events, Paul Nienhiser finished sixth at 141 Speedway on Saturday night before running second on Sunday night at The Hill Raceway.
“I haven’t been qualifying great, and we battled that both nights over the weekend,” Paul Nienhiser said. “We kept working on our car all weekend long, and we were okay on Saturday night, and on Sunday night I think we had a shot to win if I made a couple of different decisions.”
Checking in at 141 Speedway on Saturday night, Nienhiser timed the AGRI-YIELD/CAM2 Lubricants/Midland Performance No. 9x entry in 11th fastest in time trials forcing him to win his heat race for a shot into the night’s Dash.
Lining up on the pole of his heat, the Chapin, IL driver hit the loud pedal as the green lights flashed on, and he jumped into the race lead. Picking up the win, Nienhiser punched his ticket into the Dash where he then drew the two.
Finishing fourth in the Dash, Nienhiser lined up in the fourth row of the feature event, and admittedly never was able to get going. Battling inside the Top-10 all race long, Nienhiser closed the night out with a sixth-place finish.
Traveling to The Hill Raceway on Sunday night, Nienhiser again didn’t quite get off to the start to the night he had hoped for as he again timed in 11th fastest in time trials.
Able to once again win his heat, Nienhiser was in the Dash where a third-place finish placed him in the fifth starting spot for the 30-lap feature event.
Powering into fourth as the feature event went green, Nienhiser looked solid in the Top-Five as he clicked off quick laps using the low side of the speedway. Moving to the top of the track, Nienhiser worked his way into second as he saw challengers poke their nose underneath him, he opted to move back to the bottom.
A late restart saw Nienhiser keep pace with the race leader, but he wasn’t able to make a late bid for the win, and capped the weekend off with a second-place finish.
“I wonder if I should have stayed committed to the top a little long on Sunday night, but once I saw a nose wing, I opted to change my line” he added. “I felt like I could pace the leader late, but he never made a mistake and we came away with a runner up finish.”
