Andy Gregg 5th to Open Final Season in GUTS Racing No. 16x

PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night Andy Gregg kicked off what will be the 21st and final season of his family-owned GUTS Racing No. 16x by picking up a fifth-place finish during Placerville Speedway’s regular season opener.

“It was a really good start to what is the last year of the GUTS Racing No. 16x car,” Andy Gregg said. “We timed in really well, and we were really in the mix all night long. The two double-file restarts didn’t go our way and shuffled us back a few positions, but that is what makes double-file restarts so cool and why I am a big fan of them.”

Timing the GUTS/LAL Motorsports/Crane Inspection Agency backed No. 16x machine in fifth fastest in qualifying time trials, Gregg would pick up a fourth place finish in his heat race and earn a spot in the nightly redraw.

Pulling the three pill, Gregg would line up in the second row to start the 25-lap feature event in front of a limited capacity crowd on a very brisk spring night at the track he has called home for over 20-years.

With the initial start getting off to a rocky start with pole sitter John Clark spinning to a stop in turns one and two, Gregg would move up the pole for the second attempted start.

Justin Sanders would get off the to the early lead, but Gregg settled into second and chased after the leader as they quickly reached the back of the pack.

Racing through traffic, Gregg would continue to hold down the second position until the caution was needed on the race’s 13th lap. The ensuing restart would see Blake Carrick sneak by Gregg and drop him back to the third position when the caution again flew on the 17th lap.

The lap 17 restart would see Gregg try to make a run on the lead duo of Carrick and Sanders, however he would drop a couple of positions as he fell back to fifth. Chasing after Shane Golobic in the closing laps as he tried to overtake fourth, Gregg would cap Saturday night off with a fifth-place finish.

“Big thanks to all of my guys for their hard work all night,” Gregg said. “It is nice to know we have a strong car, so hopefully we can keep the speed up and pick off a couple of these wins in 2021.”

Andy would like to thank GUTS, LAL Motorsports, Crane Inspection Agency, Meyers and Son Drywall, Nail it Roofing, CTL Forest Management, ARP Enterprises, Ervin Sales, Aaron Dosh Attorney at Law, Ice House Resort, Triple X, Wilwood, FK Shocks, FK Rod Ends, K&N, King Racing Products, BR Motorsports, Amerikote, Pony Express Service, Eagle Grit, Sierra Ice, Ford’s Only, MF Inc., and Gilly’s Radiator for their support.

ON TAP: Gregg returns to action on Saturday night at Placerville Speedway.
