PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in a race that means near and dear to his heart for possibly the last time, Andy Gregg would pay homage to fallen friend, Mark Forni on Saturday night and tally a 10th place finish in the Mark Forni Classic.
“The crew chief/driver really let the team down on Saturday night,” Andy Gregg said. “We should have been a lot better in the feature, I just messed it up and we were basically hanging on for a Top-10.”
A total of 25 cars piled into the pit area for Saturday night’s Mark Forni Classic at Placerville Speedway, and the driver who calls Diamond Springs, CA home got things underway by timing the GUTS/LAL Motorsports/Crane Inspection Agency backed No. 16x entry in 11th fastest.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the driver known as ‘Guts’, would finish in the third position, which transferred him into the feature event, but kept him out of all the all-important Top-eight redraw.
Finding himself 14th on the starting grid, Gregg would have his work cut out for himself on a surface that was a little tricky in early August with area fire smoke acting as a shield from the sun much of the day, and allowing moisture to stay in the surface.
The moisture would actually lead to some rough patches on the ¼ mile bullring and make things a little tricky during the 25-lap feature event.
When the race came to life, Gregg would admittedly struggle to get his mount moving forward, but the veteran driver was patient as he vied towards the Top-10. Hoping to mount a charge in front of his friends in family during his final Mark Forni Classic feature, Gregg would close his night out with a 10th place finish.
“It was still a fun night, and to run the race in honor or Mark is a blast,” Gregg said. “We miss him dearly, and we hope he enjoyed the show.”
