PETERSEN MEDIA: Overcoming an issue in his heat race, Austin Liggett would rally from his 17th starting position in the feature event to finish fifth in what was a non-stop affair.
“We timed in well, but got caught up in a heat race ordeal that put us scratch on the field for the feature event,” Liggett said. “We had a great car but there was never any yellow flags to bunch us up. Considering how the night started, we will definitely take the Top-Five.”
Timing the Excel Environmental Services/Lucas Oil/Hurst Fabrications backed No. 83 entry in fifth quickest in time trials, Liggett would see his good start come to an abrupt end during his heat race.
With a fellow competitor losing the handle right in front of him, the Tracy, CA driver would have nowhere to go and would end up tagging the car and knocking his front end out ending his heat race.
Able to make repairs in ample time prior to the feature event, Liggett would find himself back in the 17th starting position for the 30-lap affair. When the green flag dropped, Liggett was hard on the throttle as he began working his way forward.
With the race clicking off at a rapid pace, Liggett had to go as the field was getting stretched out. Jumping inside the Top-10, the current series point leader would continue to make up ground as he car was simply dialed in and making speed.
With time running out, Liggett would make his way into the fifth spot and really needed a yellow as the lead pack had broken away.
Going non-stop, Liggett would not get the break he needed as he closed his Saturday night out with an impressive run from 17th to fifth.
“My dad really had our car good in the feature event and I was begging for a yellow to have a little help but it just did not happen,” Liggett added. “Fun to come from the back, but hopefully in a couple of weeks we can have a smooth night.”
