PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting acclimated to each other during the Louie Vermeil Classic and the Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico, CA, Austin McCarl and the Country Builders Racing team turned in a solider performance as the Altoona, IA driver pocked an 11th place finish with ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt’.
“Saturday night was a big improvement for us following a tough go at the Gold Cup,” Austin McCarl said. “Hanford is one of the tracks that I have ran at a few times now, so a little familiarity and some hard work over the week went a long way, but we still have improvements I think we can make.”
Getting off to a strong start in qualifying time trials, McCarl timed the Country Builders/Ochoco West Lumber/BMRS backed No. 88 entry in eighth fastest.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, McCarl would get off to a sluggish start which resulted in him losing a couple of spots in the running order. Finishing fifth, McCarl was confident heading into the feature as he was able to learn a few things over the course of his eight-lap heat.
Gridding the field from the 14th starting position, McCarl would work his way forward as he fought on the outside of the Top-10. With a very strong car under him, McCarl would make a couple of missteps in traffic which hindered in from a better finish he noted.
Still, going toe-to-toe with the best in the country in just his fifth night with Country Builders Racing, McCarl capped the Outlaws CA swing off with an 11th place finish.
“I am pretty happy with how things felt on Saturday night, and really feel like we were better than where we finished but I made a couple of mistakes,” McCarl said. “The way things work out, we have a few more races back in Hanford, CA and I think we can build off this for sure.
