Becker and Van Lare Motorsports 12th at Key Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA- After August’s original Johnny Key Classic date was pushed back due to wildfires in the area, Sean Becker and Van Lare Motorsports made their way to Ocean Speedway on Saturday night for the makeup date where ‘The Shark’ would record a 12th place finish during the 35-lap feature event.

“Unfortunately, we really just struggled all night long,” Sean Becker said. “But I have the confidence that Jim Van Lare will have this team performing like it should as the season begins to come to a close.”

A total of 48 winged 360’s checked in for the 60th running of the event, and Becker would get the Pro Aggregate/All About Fire Protection/Bianchi Farms backed No. 5v timed in 26th fastest in qualifying time trials.

Racing to a fifth-place finish in heat race action, the Roseville, CA driver would find himself in one of the twin “B” mains for one final shot to punch his ticket into the 35-lap Johnny Key Classic finale.

Able to finish in the second position behind DJ Netto, Becker would indeed earn the transfer into the finale where he would roll off the starting grid from the 19th starting position.

As the night moved along, the once hooked up Ocean Speedway surface had turned extremely slick for the feature event and would eventually turn abrasive and take rubber.

Coming from the back of the pack, the veteran driver knew the importance of making up ground early as the inevitable rubber would ultimately put a stoppage in passing.

When the race came to life, Becker would have a hard time getting going as he was mired in traffic with drivers jockeying for position on the slippery surface.

Running back in 20th for the first 10-laps, Becker would start to make some headway around the race’s halfway point as he jumped into the 15th position by the 20th lap.

Why he would slip back to 18th for a lap, Becker would actually get stronger as he was able to find the rubber before some of the other drivers and jumped back up to the 14th position, and then took over 12th with just four laps left in the race.

Chasing after the Top-10, Becker would be unable to catch them, though would just narrowly miss out on the 11thspot at the finish line.

Becker and Van Lare Motorsports would like to thank Pro Aggregate, All About Fire Protection, Bianchi Farms, Shark Racing Engines, CCI, Van Lare Steering Repair, and Triple X Race Co. for their support in 2020.

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-33, Wins-4, Top 5’s- 15, Top-10’s- 19

ON TAP: Becker will be back in action on Friday October 30th in Hanford, CA in the Monhoff Racing entry, and then on Saturday October 31st in Marysville, CA in the Van Lare Motorsports car.
