PETERSEN MEDIA- Traveling to Hanford, CA over the weekend after Mother Nature threw a wrinkle into the their plans, Ryan Bernal and the Mike Phulps Motorsports team would pick up two Top-10 finishes during the 31st Annual Penny Newman Grain Cotton Classic.

“We ran well on Friday night during the 360ci show, and on Saturday we were good, I just made a mistake and luckily the car was good enough to come from the back,” Ryan Bernal said.

Opening the weekend up on Friday night, Bernal would time the Metal Works/DMI/S&S Automotive backed No. 56 in ninth fastest in qualifying time trials.

Picking a win during his heat race, Bernal would then finish third in the Dash, which would line him up in the second row of the 30-lap feature event. From the second row, Bernal would find himself in the third spot as the lead duo battled hard in front of him.

Slipping back to the fifth spot as the leaders fought through traffic, the Hollister, CA driver would work his way back up to a fourth place finish at the stripe.

Bolting the 410ci engine into the frame rails for Saturdays’ King of the West event, Bernal would continue to show speed at the track he scored his first winged sprint car feature event win at, as he would time in fourth fastest.

Running second in his heat race to DJ Netto, Bernal would still have a spot in the nightly Dash, as his second place finish would put him on the front row of the ‘A’ Main alongside Tim Kaeding.

Sliding back to the fifth spot in the opening laps as he adjusted to the slick conditions offered up to the drivers, Bernal would run inside the Top-Five until he got over the cushion on lap 17 and came to a stop.

Going to the back of the pack, Bernal would get his elbows up and pick off cars at will. In the final 13 laps of the race, Bernal would come roaring back to finish in the seventh spot.

“We had a really good car, but I messed up and cost us,” Bernal said. “My guys work hard and give me a strong car weekly, so I have to thank them. We are all really excited about the Trophy Cup.”

Bernal and the Mike Phulps Motorsports team would like to thank Keizer Wheels, DMI, S&S Automotive, King Racing Products, Metal Works, Hoosier Racing Tires, Core Power, ART Chassis, Tri-L Mandarin Ranch, Tel-Tac, Willwood, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Permatex, Alan Kaiser Construction, Outlaw Graphics, BR Motorsports, FK Rod Ends, STIDA, Rockwell Security, ButlerBuilt, GoScope, 4 Alarm Promotions, and Dean Dealy Motorsports for their support during the 2016 season.
