PETERSEN MEDIA- Ryan Bernal and his Mike Phulps Motorsports team participated with the USAC Southwest Series during the Freedom Tour last week, and after having mechanical issues during the opener, Bernal would pick up three top-five finishes including a pair of second place efforts.
“After having bad luck on Wednesday night, we came back and had three really good night’s of racing,” Ryan Bernal said.
With mechanical issues knocking him out of competition following his heat race at the Lawton Speedway on Wednesday night, Bernal and company would then head to the Creek County Speedway on Thursday.
Picking up the heat race win aboard the Keizer Wheels/DMI/S&S Automotive No. 56 machine, Bernal would find himself on the pole for the feature event. Getting off to a slow start, Bernal would fall back to fourth, but would still be a factor on this night.
Working his way back up to the third spot, Bernal would chase after Blake Hahn and Brady Bacon for much of the race, and would make a late race pass on Bacon to claim the second spot at the finish line.
Heading to Wichita, KS on Friday night, Bernal and his team would again pick up the heat race win at the 81 Speedway and he would line up in the second row of the 30-lap A Main event.
On an extremely fast racing surface, Bernal would battle with Brady Bacon during much of the race as passing on this night was at a premium. Taking fifth at the line, Bernal would head to the Dodge City Raceway Park looking to end his week on a high note.
Finishing fourth in heat race action, the Holister, CA driver would line the King Racing Products/Metal Works/Hoosier Racing Tires entry up in the 12th position on an extremely slick and racy DCRP surface.
Getting off to a great start, Bernal could put his entry anywhere he needed as he worked his way forward. Seemingly passing cars at will, Bernal would get into the second spot as he went to work on RJ Johnson.
As the track started to take rubber, Bernal was forced to get in line, and his bid for a win would come up short as he would settle for the second spot.
“We definitely had the car to win on Saturday night, but as I got to the lead, the track started to lay rubber and we had to get in line,” Bernal said. “I have to thank all of my guys and everyone who made these last three weeks possible.”
Bernal and the Mike Phulps Motorsports team would like to thank Keizer Wheels, DMI, S&S Automotive, King Racing Products, Metal Works, Hoosier Racing Tires, Core Power, ART Chassis, Tri-L Mandarin Ranch, Tel-Tac, Willwood, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Permatex, Alan Kaiser Construction, Outlaw Graphics, BR Motorsports, FK Rod Ends, STIDA, Rockwell Security, ButlerBuilt, GoScope, 4 Alarm Promotions, and Dean Dealy Motorsports for their support during the 2014 season.
