PETERSEN MEDIA: Spending his weekend in Bakersfield, CA, Austin Liggett would show his versatility as he would clean sweep the Sprint Car program on Friday night at Kern County Raceway Park, and also run fourth in the POWRi BCRA midget event, and follow it up with a charge from 21st to 2nd on Saturday night with the USAC West Coast 360 Series at Bakersfield Speedway.

“What a great first weekend of racing,” Austin Liggett said. “It was great to get things going and be fast out of the box. Thanks to my dad for giving me an awesome sprint car both Friday and Saturday night, as well as to Scott Pierovich for getting the midget dialed in.”

Friday night Liggett would do double duty as he competed in the first ever POWRi BCRA Lucas Oil Midget Series event as well as the companion 360 event at Kern County Raceway Park.

In sprint car action, Liggett would line the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology entry up in the second row of his heat after earning quick time honors, and put on a show as he sliced and diced his way to the front to pick up the win.

Moving into the feature event, Tim Liggett and crew would work their magic on the potent No. 83 machine, as Liggett would have some work to do coming from the sixth starting spot.

Just as he did in heat race action, the Tracy, CA driver flexed his muscle as he worked his way forward and soon found himself out front. Once in the lead, Liggett would continue to be the class of the field as he would work the slick Kern County Raceway Park surface to perfection as he went on to capture his first feature event win of the season.

Piloting a new Mona Liggett owned midget with the POWRi BCRA series, Liggett would be equally as fast in that car as well as he earned quick time honors aboard the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Morris Motorsports backed machine.

Just as he did in sprint car action, Liggett would forge his way forward in heat race action as the win moved him into the series’ first feature event of the year where he would lead the field to green.

Getting off to a tough start, Liggett would slip back to fourth as he continue to acclimate himself to the new midget ride. Settling in, Liggett would work his way forward and climb back to second late in the race. Making a bid at Chase Johnson for the race lead, Liggett’s efforts would be negated and he would fall back to fourth and go on to finish in that spot.

“Kern County is really a cool place to race, and I look forward to getting back there,” Liggett added. “I have to thank my guys for working so hard on both cars, and really giving me two fast machines to race. It was great working Scott Pierovich for the first time and having success.”

Traveling to near by Bakersfield Speedway on Saturday night to do battle with the USAC West Coast 360 series, Liggett would have a tough night as he would lose a steering box after hot laps, and get collected in a heat race wreck that put him to the back of the feature event.

With his team working diligently leading up to the ‘A’, Liggett would take the green flag from the 21st starting position, and proceed to put on an absolute show. With a racy surface underneath him, the defending series champion would make quick work of the field as he powered his way forward and worked into second in the waning laps.

Chasing after Chase Johnson for the second consecutive night, Liggett would get close to the leader but simply ran out of laps and capped a hard charge with a second place finish.

“Running like we did in the feature made thrashing all night worth it,” Austin Liggett said. “I have to thank my team for busting their tail’s all night and getting me a car that was good enough to come through the field like we did.”

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, and Morris Motorsports for their support.

2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-5, Wins-1, Top 5’s-3, Top 10’s-3

ON TAP: Liggett will be back in the Mona Liggett owned midget on Saturday night in Placerville, CA.
