Copper Classic Brings 2020 to an End for Tanner Carrick

PETERSEN MEDIA: Though the Turkey Night Grand Prix was called off earlier this year, Tanner Carrick was still able to get some racing in over the holiday weekend as the Carrick Motorsports team traveled to San Tan Valley, AZ to take part in the Copper Classic to cap their 2020 season.

“It was a fun trip to Arizona, and I have to thank everyone that made it possible,” Tanner Carrick said. “It went okay. I made a couple mistakes in my qualifier both nights and it buried us in both features.”

Kicking the Copper Classic off on Friday night, the Lincoln, CA driver would pick up a very important win during heat race action as he tabulated big points and moved into a qualifier.

Finishing sixth in his qualifier aboard the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 83T machine, Carrick would be the last driver to lock directly into the feature event on points as he sat 16th and found himself in the eighth row to start the feature event.

Mired in the back of the pack, it would prove difficult to work forward amidst dense traffic, thought the racing surface did allow Carrick to move around.

Battling with Tim Kaeding and Kalib Henry in the closing stages of the Friday night feature, Carrick would take the checkered flag with an 18th place finish.

Back at it on Saturday night for one final time in 2020, Carrick would again get his night off to a strong start as he would finish second in his heat race, until another slip up in his qualifier relegated him to a ninth place finish.

Not sitting inside the Top-16 in points on this night, Carrick would be forced into one of the twin ‘B’ Mains for one final shot at a transfer into the feature event.

Running third in his ‘B’ after starting fifth, Carrick would punch his ticket into the feature event as he would roll off the starting grid from the 22nd position.

Again, finding himself mired deep in the pack traffic would be brutal to work through. Stuck at the tail, Carrick would struggle to get moving forward. Trying to take advantage of openings, Carrick would ultimately cap his season off with a 21st place finish in the feature event.

“2020 was definitely a weird year, but we were able to nearly get 40-races in and have a lot of fun,” Carrick said. “Thanks to everyone who made it all possible and looking forward to next year already.”

Tanner Carrick would like to thank CVC, Cemex, Interstate Oil, Conti, Harris and Sloan, Emerald, Timberworks Construction, Kaeding Performance, and Arai for their continued support

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts: 35, Wins: 3, Top 5’s: 16, Top 10’s: 25

ON TAP: Carrick is slated to return to action at Arizona Speedway this Friday and Saturday for the Copper Classic.
