PETERSEN MEDIA: Teaming back up with Doug Rutz over the weekend taking part in the Canadian Gold Cup at Castrol Raceway, Justyn Cox and the team would flex their muscle as Cox will return home as the Gold Cup Champion.

“It was a great weekend,” Justyn Cox said. “We were pretty strong on Friday night and charged from the fifth spot to win the feature and put ourselves high points heading into Saturday. We charged from fourth to second in our heat and had a pretty good point lead and then the rain came. At this point officials opted to score the race on points, and we did our job and got the trophy.”

Earning quick time honors during Friday night’s preliminary night event, Cox would continue to show speed in heat race action as he charged to a second place finish and found himself in the redraw.

Pulling the five, Cox would grid the field from the third row to start the 25-lap feature event. Jumping into second in the first pair of corners, Cox chased after Kelly Miller for the next few circuits.

A restart would see Cox make a bid for the lead in turns one and two on the fifth lap, but Miller had the answer and fended him off. The next pair of corners saw Cox make a big move for the lead, and it would prove to be the race winning pass.

Out in front, Cox would keep the field at bay, though did admittedly have some tense moments in traffic. Keeping his nose to the grindstone, Cox would pocket his third win of the season and first career win in Canada.

Saturday’s program would be lined up off of points, and Cox would earn more valuable points in his heat as he advanced to second again from the fourth position.

Scheduled to start on the pole of the championship feature, Mother Nature intervened and saturated the grounds. Making the decision to call the race off, officials elected to decide the race by event points, and on the strength of his weekend, Cox earned the title of Canadian Gold Cup Champion.

“It’s not quite the way I wanted to win the thing, but we did everything right to put ourselves in that position,” Cox said. “I can’t thank Doug Rutz and his family enough for such a great opportunity all year long. It’s pretty cool to give them another Gold Cup and win another big race with them.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Michael David Winery, Five Window Beer Company, MDW Sports, Cranked Naturals, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, VSR, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2019!

2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-37, Wins-3, Top 5’s-16, Top 10’s-21

ON TAP: Justyn Cox is hoping to acquire a 410ci engine to compete in King of the West Speedweek this upcoming week, but at this time has nothing solidified yet.
