PETERSEN MEDIA- Heading from the bullrings of California to the Knoxville Raceway ½ mile is no easy feat, and though he did not have the success he had hoped for, Willie Croft is extremely thankful for everyone who made his trip possible.
“It was a dream of mine to compete at the Knoxville Raceway, and though we did not run how we had hoped, I cannot thank everyone who made this trip possible enough,” Willie Croft said.
Though he would pick up a heat race win, and make the feature event during his preliminary night, Croft’s 21st place finish would not give him enough points to lock into the Saturday program, and his team would return to action on Friday night.
“I was really happy to make the A on Wednesday night and wish we could have taken that total into the Saturday program, but with the format they have been running the last few years we were at it again on Friday night.”
A tough draw on Friday night saw Croft go out late in his 40-car qualifying flight and he would end up timing in 32nd fastest.
Needing to finish in the Top-Three of his heat to make the feature event, Croft would finish ninth from his 11th starting position and start at the rear of a B-Main event, where he would finish 20th.
“I was disappointed because that put us in the E Main on Saturday night, and I think we were much better than that,” Croft said. “It is a tough race for sure, and I was glad to be a part of it,”
Running comfortably in a transfer spot during the E, Croft would have an oil pressure gauge fail on him, and seeing low oil pressure, Croft would pull into the work area as he thought he had an engine issue at the time.
“I have to thank Kevin, Tony, Zach, and Fez for everything they did during our trip,” Croft said. “They sacrificed a lot to back with with me, and I really could not have done it without them.”
