Dawson Hammes Has Wild Week at Gold Cup Race of Champions

PETERSEN MEDIA: Competing at the 69th Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico, CA last week, Marysville, CA racer, Dawson Hammes, had a wild week when you look back at it.

“Overall, it was a tough week, but it was good to run with the 410’s again despite only having our 360ci engine,” Dawson Hammes said. “We worked hard, had some unforeseen circumstances arise, but nobody gave up.”

Kicking the week off on Wednesday night in 360ci competition with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour, Hammes’ night was cut short when contact in his heat race sent him into a series of violent flips in turns one and two. While he was able to climb from the wreckage, his car was completely destroyed, and it was decision time.

Opting to head back home, Hammes and company spent the night building a new car in preparations for their preliminary night with the World of Outlaws on Thursday night. Getting the car built, the team struggled to get the engine to fire after the Wednesday night wreck and it cost them a lot of time before heading back to Chico, CA.

Dealing with traffic, the team pulled in the gates while hot laps were underway, though they were prepared to hit the track for time trials. Timing in 21st fastest in time trials, Hammes lined the Movement Brewing/STS Farming/All About Fire Protection backed No. 55D up on the front row of his heat race.

Battling as hard as he could despite being underpowered, Hammes slipped back to a sixth-place finish and was forced into the ‘B’.

Racing his way to a third-place finish in the semi, Hammes locked into his preliminary night feature event, as he took the green flag from the 23rd starting position.

Doing all he could with his 360ci powered engine, Hammes ended up finishing 21st in the feature event, as he then was able to breathe on Friday before Saturday’s finale.

Able to hot lap on Saturday, mechanical issues sidelined him in heat race action as he was unable to make the call, which put him in the ‘D’ Main.

Getting the car to fire for the ‘D’, Hammes took the green from eighth, and needed to get into the Top-Two to advance into the ‘C’. Putting forth a great charge on a slippery track, Hammes’ Gold Cup came to an end with a third-place finish in the Saturday ‘D’.

While it was a crazy week, Hammes did end up as the second highest finishing 360ci powered car at the event.

“I had a ton of people help us out and I want to thank them all,” Hammes added. “I want ot thank my Mom and Dad for making this entire week happen. I want to thank my brother Carson and Ally for their weekly support, and I want to thank Joel Myers Jr, Cody, Nick, Travis, Josh, and everyone else that chipped in last week to help.”

Hammes Motorsports would like to thank Movement Brewing, STS Farming, All About Fire Protection, Summit Partners Burbank Agency, Harper Inc., and Ace Attorney Services for their continued support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 20, Wins: 1, Top 5’s: 7, Top 10’s: 12
