PETERSEN MEDIA: Amidst a very strong season at Marysville Raceway in 2023, Dawson Hammes made his first Sprint Car Challenge Tour start of the season on Saturday night as the series invaded his home track and he performed well as he picked up a Top-10.
“Overall, it was a good night for us taking on a very strong field of cars,” Dawson Hammes said. “We timed in fastest in our group which is huge with that series and it set us up to have a good end result.”
29 cars checked in for the track’s annual Mel and Marlyn Hall Memorial, and Hammes got his night started by timing the Movement Brewing/STS Farming/All About Fire Protection backed No. 55D in fastest in his qualifying group.
Lining up fourth in his heat race, the Marysville, CA driver hooked up in an entertaining battle with Steven Tiner as they jockeyed for fourth. Needing to finish in the Top-Five to transfer and qualify for the Dash, Hammes continued to battle as he was still safely locked in.
With Tiner getting the best of the battle, Hammes’ fifth place finish locked him into the 35-lapper and qualified him for the Dash where he took the green flag from the eighth starting position.
Finishing eighth in the six lap Dash, Hammes was set for the 35-lapper as he took the green flag from the fourth row. On the racy Marysville Raceway surface, Hammes spent much of the night battling for position inside the Top-10 as he raced with some of the region’s top drivers.
In an entertaining race on a very wide racing surface, Hammes held his own as he battled hard inside the Top-10.
When the checkered flag flew, Hammes brough his Hammes Racing mount him with a 10th place finish, his seventh Top-10 in eight starts thus far in 2023.
