PETERSEN MEDIA- Heading into the Gold Cup Race of Champions with high expectations, Willie Croft would be involved in an accident while in a transfer position on Wednesday, have an issue during the feature event on Friday night, and fall back to finish 13th during the finale on Saturday night.

“It’s been a really good season for us in California, and it is kind of a bummer we had the weekend we had during the Gold Cup,” Willie Croft explained.

Kicking his week off of Wednesday night with the Civil War Series presented by Flowmaster, Croft would time his Holey Smokes BBQ/ButlerBuilt/Brown and Miller backed No. 29 machine in 11th fastest during the first flight of time trials.

Heat race action would be un kind to Croft as engine issues would force him back to the pit area, and into the night’s B Main. Lining up seventh in the B Main, Croft would work his way up to the sixth spot. A restart would see cars tangle in front of him, and with nowhere to go, Croft would make contact and bring his night to an end.

Back in action on Friday night with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series, Croft would lay down a great lap during time trials as he would time in sixth fastest in his group.

Finishing fourth in his heat race, the Roseville, CA driver would move into the feature event where he gridded the field from the 16th starting spot. Only making a few laps, Croft would have issues and pull of the racing surface with just eight laps in the book.

The Gold Cup Race of Champions finale would see ‘Double Down’ time his machine in 19th fastest overall with 37 cars in the pit area.

A great effort in his heat race would see him work his way up to the second spot which would not only put him in the 40-lap feature event, but also gave him a spot in the all-important Dash.

Finishing seventh in the Dash, Croft would roll of from the fourth row for the 63rd Annual Gold Cup feature event. With the track slicking off in a hurry during the feature event, Croft would slowly fall outside of the top-10 as he searched for grip on the speedway.

When the wild feature event came to a close, Croft would take the checkered flag with a 13th place finish.

“It wasn’t our ideal weekend, but we still have some big races left on our schedule that we would like to win,” Croft added. “Thank to my guys for doing all they could to make it up to Chico all week, and working hard.”

Willie Croft Racing would like to thank Holey Smokes BBQ, ButlerBuilt , Brown and Miller, FK Rod Ends, Hinchman Indy, Schoenfeld, Smith Precision Products, Kaeding Performance, Dan Olson Products, Vortex Wings, Amerikote, and GUTS for their support in 2016.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-20, Wins-4, Top 5’s-7, Top 10’s-10.

ON TAP: Croft will be back in action when the King of the West Series invades the Placerville Speedway on September 24th.
