PETERSEN MEDIA: Winning the inaugural Copper Classic at Arizona Speedway one year ago, DJ Netto would remain the race’s only champion as he bounced back from a tough showing on Friday night to dominate Saturday night’s feature event.
“Friday night we were really good all night, but we had a fuel issue in the feature that cut our night short,” DJ Netto said. “Saturday night we came back and were just as good, and put a complete night together and won this deal again.”
Traveling to Arizona Speedway in the Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain backed No. 88n, DJ Netto would get the weekend kicked off by timing in fourth fastest in time trials before finishing fourth in his heat race.
Moving into the feature event, the Hanford, CA standout would line up in the sixth row for the 25-lap feature event. With something not quite right on his machine, Netto would only complete 10-laps before retiring to the pit area.
With his issues sorted out, Netto returned to action on Saturday night and jump started his night by timing in third fastest in qualifying time trials, and turning in a very strong performance in his heat race that saw him pick up the win.
Lining up on the pole for the feature event, Netto would get the jump over fellow Californian, Colby Copeland. On the extremely slick racing surface, Netto showed he would be the one to beat early as he quickly gapped the field as he found himself in lapped traffic in a few short laps.
Despite being mired in traffic, Netto continued to leave the field in his wake as he opened his lead up to just about a straightway advantage over second running Willie Croft.
The first 21 laps would go with no stoppages, and as it looked like it may go green to checkered, the caution flag would fly and bunch the field back up. The restart didn’t deter Netto as he was able to get away from the field, only to see the caution flag fly again as second running Willie Croft came to a stop with a flat right rear.
Back underway, Netto would be unchallenged as he raced his way to his fourth win of the season, and his second consecutive at the Copper Classic.
“It is great to get the 88n back in victory lane,” Netto noted. “I have to thank Cori Guy and everyone for giving me a fast racecar. It is great to end our season on a high note for the second year in a row.”
