PETERSEN MEDIA: Piloting the second most winning car in the history of Calistoga Speedway, DJ Netto broke through and scored his first career win at the historic ½ mile speedway during Saturday night’s Dirt Classic.
“We may have not have had the best car all night long, but we were there at the end and grabbed the win,” DJ Netto said. “It is so cool to win at a track with so much history and get Clyde and Marion Lamar one step closer to having the most wins at this track.”
21 King of the West cars checked in at Calistoga Speedway on Saturday night, and Netto would time the Tri-C Manufacturing/Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain backed No. 3c in 10th fastest in time trials.
Picking up his ninth heat race win of the season with the series in just 10-races, Netto would punch his ticket into the important Dash where a second place finish would put him on the front row of the 25-lap feature event.
With a ton of cars in action on this 36-/410 combo show, the Calistoga Speedway would be extremely slick come feature event time. Falling back to the second spot when the race came to life, Netto would lose a position to Rico Abreu in the opening laps and run in the third position.
In the fast paced feature event, the caution would waive on the 20th lap as second running Rico Abreu would lose a tire and spin to a stop in turns one and two. Under the yellow, read leader Michael Kofoid, would too have tire issues and would also be forced into the work area handing the lead over to Netto.
Running a flawless final five laps, Netto would park the famed No. 3c in victory lane as he claimed Dirt Classic lore. Celebrating in victory lane, Netto and his team would discover their right front shock had become dislodged making the win that much more impressive.
Netto was one of the many running double duty on this night, and timed in 10th overall with the 360 and second fastest in his time trial group.
Finishing fourth in his heat race, Netto would transfer into the feature event where he would grid the field from the 14th starting spot for the 30-lap feature.
Getting off to a nice start after celebrating a 410 win, Netto would work his way up to the ninth spot at one time during the feature event. After a couple of early cautions, Netto would seal up a tire and couldn’t get going once the race resumed and would hang on to finish 13th.
Friday night also saw Netto in action as he battled with the King of the West Series at Ocean Speedway during the Pombo/Sargent Classic.
A total of 19 cars were in action on this night as Netto timed in 12th fastest and pocketed a heat race win.
Starting and finishing ninth in the Dash, the Hanford, CA driver would line up in the fifth row for the 30-lap feature event.
On a slick surface that led up to a big curb, Netto would get into the back of another car early in the feature event and knock his nose wing down. With his car a bit of a handful much of the race, Netto would stay inside the Top-10 and come away with a seventh place finish.
“It was a long, busy weekend, and I truly have to thank everyone for all of their hard work,” Netto added. “It was busy, but grabbing the win on Saturday night made it all worth it.”
