PETERSEN MEDIA: Making a return trip to Ocean Speedway on Friday night to take part in the 57th Annual Johnny Key Classic, DJ Netto would continue to run well at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds as he would finish third when the 50-lap feature event drew to a conclusion.
“We had a really good car on Saturday night, but with the way the track was we really needed traffic to make a run at the leaders, but cautions just feel at the wrong times,” DJ Netto said. “Lee Lindgren knows how to get a car around this place, and I thank him for giving me a fast hot rod.”
With 25 Civil War Series pres. by Flowmaster cars checked into the pit area for the 57th running of the Johnny Key Classic, Netto would get things started off on a quick note as he timed the Tri C Manufacturing/Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain backed No. 3c machine in third quickest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, the Hanford, CA driver would have his elbows up on the racy ¼ mile as he was able to carve his way up to finish in the second spot and earn a spot in the all-important Dash.
Getting a great jump in the Dash, Netto would improve his feature event starting position by a row as he finished second, which placed him on the front row alongside Michael Kofoid.
When the feature event came to life, Netto would have to check up a little as the hooked up surface would see his fellow front row starter wheelie up next to him, and it would result in him falling back to third.
As the track stayed hooked up during the early laps, Netto would run comfortably in the third spot as the 50-lapper clicked off laps.
With the race nearing the scheduled ½ way break, the field would get into traffic, and action would pick up as Netto and Kyle Hirst began fighting hard for the third spot, with Netto holding the spot when the scheduled caution flag flew on lap 25.
After some adjustments during the stoppage, Netto would continue to run well in the third spot as the action resumed. With the track changing significantly in the second half of the race, he was able to move around, but his best shot at the lead duo would be in traffic, and untimely cautions would wipe that out of the equation on two occasions.
The final 13-laps would click off with no yellow’s but as Netto would close in on the leaders, he would find himself in another fight for third with Kyle Hirst and Justin Sanders, able to fend them off, the Hanford, CA driver would close his night out with a third place finish.
“It got fun there at the end,” Netto said. “The track was just too good too early, but I think if they don’t touch it, were talking about rubber the last half of the race so it’s just a tricky situation. Thanks again, to Clyde and Marion Lamar and all of these guys for their hard work.”
