Early Issues Slow Justyn Cox at Sprint Car Challenge Tour Opener

PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night saw Justyn Cox and the Cox-Berco Racing team check in at Placerville Speedway to open up the season at the speedway as well as take part in the opening round of Sprint Car Challenge Tour action. Having a solid night going, issues early in the feature event would ultimately cut Cox’s night short.

“I got timed in really bad after making a couple mistakes on my end, but we ran really well in our heat and locked into the ‘A’,” Cox noted. “We had an early flat, and then lost brakes and ultimately ended our feature event extremely early.”

With 51 cars checked into the pit area, Cox would time his Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/MDW backed No. 31c machine in sixth fastest in his qualifying group which placed him in the third row of his heat race.

From his sixth starting position, Cox would need to find a way to get up into fourth to transfer directly into the 35-lap feature event. Taking care of business, the Clarksburg, CA native would do just that as he would power into fourth and safely qualify for the first SCCT event of the season.

Slated to take the green flag from the 19th starting position, Cox would develop a flat right-rear tire while lining up for the ‘A’, and he would make a quick trip to the work area for a fresh tire.

Re-joining the field, Cox would now find himself back in the 24th starting position for the impending 35-lap feature event.

On the slick Placerville Speedway surface, Cox would battle through thick traffic as the field ran two and three-wide on the ¼ mile bullring. On the seventh lap, Cox would go into turn one and find brake issues that resulted in him hopping the infield berm and coming to a stop.

With the brake problem, Cox would make the decision to call it a night as he pulled off the speedway and returned to his pit area.

“It’s early in the season and this is the second time we have endured a brake issue, so we have some work to do this week,” Cox said. “A bummer way to start the season at Placerville Speedway, but still had a lot of fun despite the end result.”

The Cox-Berco Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Michael David Winery, MDW Sports, Cranked Naturals, Trex, Master Metal Products, Adrian Blanco Jewelers, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, VSR, , Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Don Ott Racing Engines, and Richmond Engines for their continued support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-4, Wins-0, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-2

ON TAP: Cox will be back in action on Saturday night as he is set to take part in Placerville Speedway’s regular season opener.
