PETERSEN MEDIA: With an opening in both the Van Dyke Motorsports team’s schedule as well as Gio Scelzi’s schedule, the duo decided to team up and race with both the Civil War Series and the new Sprint Car Challenge Tour over the weekend.

“It was my first time at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA and it was an awesome place,” Scelzi said. “We weren’t quite where we wanted to be after time trials, but we kept at it and got a top-five in the feature.”

With 26 cars checked into the pit area in Chico, CA, Scelzi would time the Lucas Oil/Hansen Machine/NAAKE Suspension backed No. 5th sprinter in seventh fastest during qualifying time trials.

Lining up on the pole of heat one, Scelzi would get a great jump and lead wire to tire to score the win and lock himself into the all important Dash where the four pill would line him up in the second row.

Finishing fourth in the six-lap shootout, Scelzi would grid the field from the second row in his first ever showing at the famed ¼ mile facility. When the race came to life, Scelzi would battle with Justin Sanders, though he would just hang his right rear off the racing surface and slip back to the seventh spot.

Staying calm and collected, Scelzi would quickly race his way back into the Top-Five, as he spent much of the feature event battling with Geoff Ensign. Battling for the fourth spot feverishly in the closing laps, Scelzi would take the checkered flag with a fourth place finish.

Saturday night saw Scelzi and Van Dyke Motorsports make the trip to Antioch, CA to take on the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.

Timing in fourth fastest in his qualifying group, Scelzi would line up on the front row of his heat race alongside older brother, Dominic. When the heat race came to life, contact from another competitor would send the potent No. 5h into a spin, and contact from another car would ultimately end Scelzi’s night with frame damage.

“I have to thank Harley Van Dyke for the opportunity to race for him,” Scelzi said. “I hope we can get a couple more nights in together as the year goes along.”

The Van Dyke Motorsports team would like to thank Lucas Oil, Hansen Machine, NAAKE Suspension, Maxim Chassis, and Moyle Racing Engines for their support during the year.
