PETERSEN MEDIA- Making his World of Outlaws debut in Las Vegas, NV one year ago, Gio Scelzi made a return trip to the Sin City facility last week and showed just how much a difference a year makes as he began his second stint with Roth Motorsports by scoring a fifth place finish on Wednesday night.

“It was great to get back to racing, and get back to Las Vegas and run well after a tough go last year,” Gio Scelzi said. “Dennis and Teresa Roth gave me a great opportunity to continue work with Bernie Stuebgen and I felt like we picked up right where we left off.”

Timing the Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/Jason, Tara, and Cole Roth Cattle Co. backed No. 83JR in second quickest in his time trial group on Wednesday night, the Fresno, CA wheelman would dominate his heat race and punch his ticket into the all-important Dash.

Battling Aaron Reutzel and Tim Shaffer in the Dash, Scelzi would finish third and start the feature event from the inside of the second row.

On a slick surface that produced some exceptional racing, Scelzi would take over the second spot on the 10th lap and chase after race leader, Tim Shaffer amidst a myriad of cautions that would eventually take it toll on race fuel mileage.

Following the race’s seventh caution on the 26th lap, the ensuing restart would see Scelzi get the better of Shaffer to take the race lead but a slowing car would bring out the yellow, which would then turn red for fuel, and negate the youngsters pass.

The restart following the fuel stop would see Scelzi try to make another big move to grab the lead but he would trip on the cushion and lose a couple of positions as he slipped back to finish fifth.

Looking to better his result on Thursday night, Scelzi would get off to a bit of a slow start as he timed in 14th fastest during time trials. From the fourth row of his heat, Scelzi would handle business as he worked his way up to the fifth and final transfer position and moved directly into the ‘A’ main.

Though taking the green flag from the 20th starting position, Scelzi went out confident as he would attack the slick half-mile. Working his way forward, Scelzi adapted to the conditions well as he would climb eighth spots to finish 12th despite the track taking rubber.

“Being in contention to win was really good, and that give me a ton of confidence as we head into California for the next few weeks,” Scelzi added. “Again, thanks to Dennis and Teresa Roth for giving me another shot in their car, and thanks to Todd Ventura, Bernie Stuebgen, and everyone associated with this team for their hard work.”

The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, Jason, Tara, And Cole Roth Cattle Co., Roth Investments, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Smith Titanium for their support in 2019.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 2, Wins: 0, Top 5’s: 1, Top 10’s: 1.
