PETERSEN MEDIA- Looking to lock up Rookie of the Year honors at Placerville Speedway heading into last week’s penultimate points race, Shane Hopkins put on a valiant charge from the back of the pack to record his fifth Top-10 finish of the season.

“Our night got off to a tough start, and the start of the feature was a little wild, but I was able to keep my nose clean and really have some fun on a tricky surface,” Shane Hopkins said.

Admittedly still struggling to get a good time in qualifications, Hopkins would end up 16th quickest overall on the speed chart. Going into heat race action, Hopkins would end up having a torsion bar go dead on him and it would result in him doing everything but flipping and it would send him to the night’s ‘B’ Main.

Dominating the semi, Hopkins’ night would continue on as he would transfer into the feature event where he would roll off the starting grid from the 17th position.

With the track being dominant around the high side, Hopkins would tip-toe around the first few laps with all kinds of action taking place around him. Able to keep the rubber side down on his Moxie Mechanical/Morrison Concrete/TNT Powdercoat entry, Hopkins would soon start taking advantage of the restarts as he forged his way toward the Top-10.

Hopkins would look like a seasoned veteran as he carved his way forward around the racy ¼ mile that was presented to the drivers on this night. Getting inside the Top-10, Hopkins would get his entry up to the seventh spot late in the feature until a late caution flag flew.

While running seventh, the ensuring restart would see Hopkins slip back to eighth in the waning laps and that is where he would go on to finish as he is just one race away from officially being crowned Rookie of the Year and capping off a third place finish in the point standings.

“I have to thank Vern Morrison and everyone that helps us out,” Hopkins said. “We have had some up and downs this season but it has been a blast. Looking forward to getting the Placerville season wrapped up in a couple of weeks and then turning our attention back to the Sprint Car Challenge Tour’s last couple of events.”

Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports would like to thank Moxie Mechanical, Morrison Concrete, TNT Powdercoat, LRB Ent., ADCO Driveline, C&H Veteran Enterprises, Soares Motorsports, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Capital Ace Hardware, Johnson Motorsports, American River Overhead, Americote Painting, Gary Morgan Graphics, and ART Enterprises for their support in 2018.

2018 BY THE NUMBERS- Starts-21, Wins-0, Top-5’s-2, Top 10’s-5

ON TAP- Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports will be idle for a couple of weeks before returning to action on September 15th at Placerville Speedway.
