PETERSEN MEDIA- One week removed from a career best finish, Shane Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports followed the Sprint Car Challenge Tour to Petaluma Speedway on Saturday night where Hopkins essentially made his first  start at the tricky track.

“Last year we tried to run Petaluma Speedway but we had engine issues in hot laps and we didn’t do much,” Hopkins said. “Basically making our first start there on Saturday night I think I learned a ton, and made some good laps and just came up short of the feature event.”

In a star-studded heat race and qualifying group, Hopkins timed the Moxie Mechanical/Morrison Concrete/TNT Powdercoat backed No. 97 machine in seventh quickest and would line up in the seventh starting position for his heat race.

Heat race action would see Hopkins battle with Dustin Golobic and Michael ‘Buddy’ Kofoid, before a seventh place finish would force the Rookie of the Year contender into the 15-lap ‘B’ main event.

Lining up in the fourth row of the semi, Hopkins would need to work his way into one of the top-four finishing positions to keep his night rolling into the 35-lap feature event.

Continuing to adapt and figure out a new facility and a new surface, Hopkins would jump into sixth where the green flag was displayed to the field. Hitting his marks, he would work into fifth by the fifth lap as a transfer position was within his grasps.

In a torrid battle for position late in the race, Hopkins would work into third on the 10th lap, but would shuffle back to fifth on the next. Battling with Kalib Henry in the closing laps for the final transfer, Hopkins would come up just short and his night would come to an end.

“It was a fun night, disappointing to not make the show, but still nothing to hang our heads about,” Hopkins added. “I have to thank my Grandpa Ernie, my Uncle Jamie, my Dad, Taylor, and Vern for all of their hard work through the night.”

Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports would like to thank Moxie Mechanical, Morrison Concrete, TNT Powdercoat, LRB Ent., ADCO Driveline, C&H Veteran Enterprises, Soares Motorsports, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Capital Ace Hardware, Johnson Motorsports, American River Overhead, Americote Painting, Gary Morgan Graphics, and ART Enterprises for their support in 2018.

2018 BY THE NUMBERS- Starts-4, Wins-0, Top-5’s-1, Top 10’s-1

ON TAP- Shane and Moxie Motorsports are set to return to Placerville Speedway on Saturday night.
