Joel Myers Jr 13th During Friday’s Stop at Ocean Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA: Dealing with Mother Nature again this past weekend, Joel Myers Jr was able to get a night of racing in on Friday night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA where he would tally a 13th place finish.

“We kind of struggled in time trials, and that really dictated how the rest of our night went,” Joel Myers Jr said. “We were really good in our heat race and ran all the way up to second after missing the inversion, but not making the Dash we had to start deep in the field and couldn’t really seem to get going.”

With 28 cars checked in for the lone Sprint Car event in Nor Cal over the weekend, Myers Jr would time the Starr Property Management/Morrison Concrete/Hi-Plains Building Division backed No. 83V in 18th fastest.

Just missing the Top-16 heat race inversion, the Sebastopol, CA 16-year-old would line up fifth in his heat race on a fairly slick and racy Ocean Speedway surface.

Getting his elbows up, Myers Jr would make some quick moves to overtake the second spot as he chased after Tanner Carrick. Needing to get the win to advance into the Dash and drastically improve his starting position, Myers Jr would be unable to get to Carrick and settled for a second-place finish.

Moving into the 30-lap feature event, ‘Jr’ would take the green flag from the 16th starting position. With the track still slick and wide, moving forward was still an option, however maneuvering through traffic would prove to be a daunting task on this night.

When the race came to life, Myers spent the first half of the race running where he started as he couldn’t make anything happen as he battled in thick traffic on the ¼ mile bullring.

Continuing to be stalled out back in 15th, Myers Jr would make a couple of moves in the final 10-laps of the race. Moving into 14th on the 20th lap, Myers Jr would then overtake the 13th spot on the 22nd lap, and actually got into 11th on the 27thlap.

Getting held up with two to go, Myers Jr would lose a couple of spots as he slipped back to 13th where he would go on to finish.

“After a couple of really good runs the last few weeks, we hoped to continue that momentum on Friday night, but we were just a little off,” Myers Jr said. “We have speed, and I’m confident we will get back on track this weekend.”

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts- 14, Wins-0, Top-5’s- 5, Top-10’s-6

ON TAP: Myers Jr and Vertullo Motorsports will be right back at it on Friday night in Watsonville, CA before making a the trip to Merced Speedway on Saturday night for Sprint Car Challenge Tour action.
