PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting a night of action under his belt one week ago at the Ocean Speedway, Justyn Cox made the return trip on Saturday night as he competed with the Civil War Series Presented By Flowmaster in the 54th Annual Johnny Key Classic Presented By Al’s Roofing Supply.

“I made some mistakes, and took too long to get going in the first segment, and then the rubber came, and we ended up 13th,” Cox said. “Rod Tiner, Jr and my guys worked hard, and I feel better and better each week in the car.”

Going out in the middle of time trials with 43 cars taking time, Cox laid down a great lap for when he went out, and timed the Capitol Casino/Jimmy Vasser Chevrolet/JRI Shocks No. 311c entry in eighth fastest.

Starting on the pole of his qualifier, Cox got the jump and took the early lead, but he soon felt pressure from Rico Abreu. With Abreu throwing a monster slide job on him, Cox was able to cross back over, and take the top spot, as he picked up the win and advanced to the feature event.

Lining up 13th in the 50-lap feature event, Cox quickly found himself in a battle for the 12th spot with Carson Macedo. When the race got started, the track was extremely racey, and provided some very exciting action.

Exchanging sliders with Macedo, Cox got up over the cushion on the 20th circuit and slipped back to the 17th spot, where he would be running when the first segment came to and end at lap 25.

Making adjustments to compensate for the rubber that was beginning to adhere to the speedway, Cox was able to make some small gains during the final part of the race, as he worked his way up to a 13th place finish.

“It was pretty tough to pass during the final run, and I was happy to gain some spots,” Cox said. “We earned some, and took advantage of some freebies, but all in all, I am pleased with the direction that we are headed.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Capitol Casino, Jimmy Vasser Chevrolet, JRI Shocks, JRD Endeavors, NAAKE, LRB, Tim’s Hot Rods, Justice Brothers, Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, Worton Designs, Manzer Motorsports, MTFX Graphics, Konnected,  and College Cyclery for their support during the 2014 season.

2014 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-16, Wins-0, Top 5’s-3, Top 10’s-7

ON TAP: Cox will be back in action on Wednesday, September 3rd at the Silver Dollar Speedway for the Civil War Gold Cup.
