PETERSEN MEDIA: Making his first attempt at the Dirt Cup in Alger, WA, Justyn Cox had an up an down weekend that saw him lock into the Saturday night feature following the two preliminary night races and finish 16th in the big show.

“I have to thank Doug Rutz for the opportunity to get up here and compete in this race,” Cox said. “It was an up and down weekend, and I let the team down on Friday and it really hurt us.”

Thursday night the action came to life, and Cox would advance to fifth after starting eighth in his heat race, which placed him into a qualifier. Finishing second in the qualifier, Cox had a nice points night going as he would sit 12th and lock into the opening night feature event.

On the slick Skagit Speedway surface, Cox would make up some ground early as he jumped into 8th as the track began taking rubber. As the rubber continued to down, it turned into a single file race, and Cox would hold his own and finish eighth.

Drawing the pole for his heat race on Friday night, Cox would shoulder the blame of a spin out on the first lap that placed him at the back of one of the twin ‘b’ mains on this night.

Lining up 15th, Cox had some work to do with only three transferring to the ‘A’ out of each semi. Showing some really good car speed, Cox would get up to the sixth position but time would run out and his Friday would come to an early end.

When the points shook out, Cox found himself in 15th which was good enough to lock him into the Saturday night feature event.

From the 15th starting position on Saturday, Cox and his Rutz Racing teammate, Justin Sanders would battle hard for much of the night as he jockeyed for position in the Top-10.

Running in 11th with just 10-laps to go in the race, Cox would get sent spinning and it would force him to the back of the pack. Picking up a couple of positions, Cox closed his first Dirt Cup out with a 16th place finish.

“It was cool to get to compete in my first Dirt Cup,’ Cox said. “It is always fun to race with the Rutz Racing team, and I have to thank them all for making this possible.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Michael David Winery, Five Window Beer Company, MDW Sports, Cranked Naturals, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, VSR, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2019!
