PETERSEN MEDIA: With only one night at Thunderbowl Raceway under his belt heading into his first Trophy Cup, Kyle Offill would focus on keeping his nose clean and making good laps on a surface that was tough on many.
“It was my first Trophy Cup, and I felt pretty good at times,” Kyle Offill said. “I made a lot of laps on one of the most technical tracks around and I learned some things that I can use in the season finale and next year.”
90 cars jammed into the pit area to open the 24th Annual Trophy Cup up and Offill would time the Country Builders Construction/Ochoco West/Boise Cascade backed No. 2k entry in 34th quickest in his flight.
Lining up in the fifth row of his heat race, Offill would have a good run, as well as a little luck, and would come home with a third place finish which was key for Trophy Cup points.
Lining up 16th in the ‘B’, the Tracy, CA driver would move forward as he admittedly felt really good on the track racing with some of the regions top talent as he ended his night with a 14th place finish in the semi.
Back in action on Friday night for another preliminary night, Offill would just miss out on making the heat race inversion as he timed in 25th quick and lined up seventh in his heat race.
Working his way forward in heat race action, contact with another car sent him to the back as he finished the heat with a damaged front end. Lining up 19th in the semi, Offill would impress on the rough and tumble surface.
While most had a hard time gaining ground, the 16-year-old pilot worked his way up to the 10th spot. As he continued to fight for more, he would lose the handle on his machine and spin to the infield and end his night with the infield tires as he put it.
Lining up in a ‘D’ Main on Saturday night, Offill would pick up a second place finish and keep his night alive as he worked into the ‘C’ main. Lining up in the 12th starting position, Offill would again turn in a valiant effort as he got up to the eighth spot when the checkered flag waived, which would bring an end to his first Trophy Cup.
“Overall I think it went okay,” Offill added. “Brad Goebel, Alex Johnson, and my family did a great job and worked really hard. They always give me a top notch car, and hopefully this is just the starting point at Trophy Cup and we can improve each year moving forward.”
