Liggett Lands on Ventura Raceway Podium

PETERSEN MEDIA: Making the trip to Ventura Raceway on Saturday night, Austin Liggett would put together a very strong night that saw him flirt with his third win of the season before settling for second during USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car Series competition.

“We really had a good car on Saturday night, and if it wasn’t for traffic, I think we had a good shot to get a win,” Austin Liggett said. “Had a great battle with Troy Rutherford, and it was really cool to see a packed grandstand down there.”

With 23 cars checked in for battle at the scenic Ventura Raceway, Liggett would get off to a great start, as he timed the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology NO. 83 machine in second fastest in time trials. Unbeknownst to him at the time, the Tracy, CA driver would make this a common theme for the night ahead.

Lining up sixth in his heat race, Liggett would flex his muscle as he worked around the tight confines of the raceway and picked up a second-place finish. Moving into the feature event, Liggett would roll off the starting grid from the sixth position.

Front the third row, Liggett showcased a very strong car in the feature event, as he carved his way to the front, and wrestled the lead away from Rutherford on the 13th lap.

Getting into heavy traffic one he was out front; Liggett would find himself in close quarter action with the back of the field as he tried to keep his machine out front as Rutherford applied heavy pressure.

Liggett’s lead would be short lived, as he was forced to check up in traffic which allowed Rutherford to get back by on the 17th circuit.

Keeping pace with the leader for the rest of the race, Liggett would take a couple of shots at Rutherford, and would come up just short as he came up a ½ car length short at the checkered flag.

“Overall, it isn’t the most fun to get second, but traffic is a part of this, and I had a blast battling with Rutherford,” Liggett added. “My dad really had our car rolling in the feature, so I have to thank him and as always the crew, Matt, Landon, Angela, Ali, and my mom.

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, ZMAX Racing Oil, and Transport Products Unlimited for their support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-13, Wins-2, Top 5’s-9, Top 10’s-10

ON TAP: Liggett returns to action on July 9th at Merced Speedway and on the July 10th at Placerville Speedway.
