PETERSEN MEDIA: With little issues hampering Paul McMahan and Destiny Motorsports’ Jackson Nationals, McMahan is hoping for better during a two-night stay in Knoxville, IA this week.

“We put together a new car for the Jackson Nationals, and it seemed to be pretty good but we just had little things nag us and really put us in a hole for the entire weekend,” Paul McMahan said.

The 39th Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals kicked off on Thursday night in Jackson, MN and McMahan would open the three-day event up by timing the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion Brand Lubricants machine in ninth fastest in his qualifying flight.

Battling brake issues during his heat race, the Elk Grove, CA native turned Nashville, TN resident would finish in the fifth spot and transfer into the night one feature event.

Doing what they could to rectify the issues heading into the feature event, McMahan would still have intermittent brakes, which made life tough on the big ½ mile speedway. Salvaging the night to earn as many Jackson Nationals points as possible, McMahan and company would finish in the 17th spot.

Back in action on Friday night for the second go at the big Jackson Motorplex ½ mile, McMahan would time in 12th fastest in his time trial flight before having some issues at the start of his heat race.

Able to make repairs, McMahan would have his work cut out for himself, as he would line up from the tail end of the field. Working his way back forward, McMahan would chase after Tim Kaeding for the final transfer spot, but would ultimately wind up in the Last Chance Showdown.

With a lot of cars in action for this event, the track would be on the verge of taking rubber when cars pushed out for the semi. With rubber going down in areas, passing would be come extremely difficult though fourth fifth and sixth would run in a tight pack.

Trying to make something happen in the closing laps to get to a transfer spot, McMahan’s night would end with a sixth place finish in the semi.

Sitting 22nd in event points heading into Saturday night’s finale, McMahan would line up in the fifth starting spot in heat race action. Turning in a nice performance, he would advance from fifth to finish in the third spot and move into the Jackson Nationals feature event.

Lining up for the feature, McMahan would lose the handle on his machine and he would give up his original starting position and find himself taking the green flag from 24th.

On an extremely fast racing surface for the feature event, McMahan would slowly work his way forward as he worked the Jackson Motorplex cushion. Able to gain spots as the race clicked off at a quick pace, McMahan would close his weekend out with an 18th place finish.

“Things just didn’t go our way this weekend, but when we weren’t fighting issues I was happy with the feel of things,” McMahan added. “I am looking forward to a couple nights at Knoxville this weekend, as it is a big weekend for everyone to get a look at the track before August.”
