PETERSEN MEDIA: DJ Netto had an up and down night on Saturday night with the King of the West Fujitsu Series. Taking part in Kern County Raceway Park’s first ever winged sprint car race, Netto would rebound from an on track incident in the middle of the race and finish in the seventh spot.

“It was really and up and down night,” DJ Netto said. “We were a little disappointed with time trials, but we got the job done in our heat and made the Dash. In the A, I got myself into early trouble, but luckily I was able to race my way back up to seventh.”

24 cars took part in the maiden voyage at KCRP, and Netto opened his 2017 King of the West campaign by timing the Tri-C Manufacturing/Netto Ag/Penny Newman Grain No. 3c sprinter in seventh fastest in qualifications.

Lining up on the pole of the night’s first heat race, Netto would get the jump and set sail from the rest of the field. Continuing to get a feel for the central valley’s newest dirt track, Netto would pick up the win and advance into the all-important Dash.

Finishing eighth in the Dash, the Hanford, CA driver would grid the field from the fourth row for the KWS’s first 30-lap feature of the 2017 season. On the extremely racy KCRP surface, Netto would get off to a nice start as he jumped up into the sixth spot and battled for top-five position.

Working the cushion, Netto would get into the curb a little to hard and it would result in his machine spinning to a stop on the 15th lap forcing him to the back with just 15-laps left.

With the surface allowing for a lot of passing, Netto was able to get back to work and work his way back forward as he made up lost ground. Using a couple of late restarts, Netto would fight back and close his night out with a seventh place finish.

“I just got into the cushion a little too hard, and we spun out,” Netto said. “It was good to come back and finish where we did, but I need to do a better job of keeping us up front.”

2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-12, Wins-1, Top 5’s-2, Top 10’s-4
