PETERSEN MEDIA- Making his return to the seat of the Antaya Motorsports No. 16a in 2018 after limited starts at the end of the 2016 season, Colby Copeland hoped to set the tone for the year to come on Saturday night at Marysville Raceway but early contact in the feature event would end the team’s night just 7 laps into the race.

“We just kind of got cleaned out early in the race and that was that,” Copeland said. “I am excited for the year ahead, and have to thank Larry Antaya and everyone for making this possible.”

With 27 cars packed into the pits for the Sherm and Loree Toller Memorial, Copeland would be the first car out for time trials on a surface that was still a little wet.

Timing the Good Guys Rod and Custom Association/Fuel Curve/Fire Protection Management/Kaeding Performance No. 16a entry in 17th fastest, Copeland would just miss the heat race inversion and would line up in the third row of the first heat race.

On a fast racing surface, Copeland was show persistence as he stayed within striking distance of the fourth and final transfer position. Making a move on the last lap, Copeland would end up fourth at the stripe and safely in the 25-lap feature.

Lining up 16th for the big show, Copeland would make some early moves once the race came to life after a couple of early yellow flags. Working his way forward in an early green flag run, contact from a fellow competitor would see Copeland come to a stop in turn three on the race’s seventh lap and it would bring his night to an end.

“It was good to get to the track and get back working with everyone,” Copeland noted. “I will do some racing in my personal car this week before we get back to it with the Outlaws in Tulare in a couple of weeks.”

Antaya Motorsports would like to thank Good Guys Rod and Custom Association, Fuel Curve, Fire Protection Management, Inc.,  and Kaeding Performance for their support in 2018.
