PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking advantage of an open weekend in his busy USAC National Midget schedule, Tanner Carrick and his Tanner Carrick racing team would make the trip to Yuma, AZ and take on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour during their final event of the 2017 season at Cocopah Speedway.
“It was a good experience,” Carrick said. “It was the first time I have been able to run a winged car on a big track, and I feel like I learned a lot each night.”
The three-day event got underway on Thursday night with Carrick lining the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 83T machine up in the third row of his first heat race of the night.
With a loaded field of veterans on hand, Carrick would go to school over the weekend as he kicked things off with an eighth place finish in his heat race. Moving into a qualifier, the Lincoln, CA pilot would grid the field in the fifth and final row.
Continuing to acclimate to the large Cocopah Speedway, Carrick would finish ninth and move into the 12-lap ‘B’ Main where he would line up in the second row. Battling with the likes of Harli White and Lucas Wolfe, Carrick’s fifth place finish would bring his night to an end.
Back in action on Friday night, Carrick would line up in the fourth row of his heat race, and pick up a position as he finished sixth in heat race competition. Gridding the field from the fourth row of his qualifier, the youngster would battle Sprint Car veterans JJ Hickle and Logan Forler as a ninth place finish would place him in the third row of ‘B’ Main No. 2.
Battling with the likes of Cam Smith and Josh Shipley, Carrick would gain valuable laps as he would close his night with a ninth place finish.
The three-day event would come to a close on Saturday night with Carrick lining up in the third row of his last chance qualifier. Finishing fifth, the youngster would have one final shot at transferring into the feature event via the ‘B’ Main.
Lining up ninth in the semi, Carrick would go to work with Northwest drivers Cam Smith and Greg Hamilton as they jockeyed for position inside the Top-10. When the race concluded, Carrick would close his weekend out with an eighth place finish in the semi.
“I have to thank everyone who made it possible to get out to Arizona and run for three days,” Carrick said. “We had a couple of big midget races on the horizon now, and I am looking forward to getting back to work with the Keith Kunz Motorsports guys.”
