Tough Trip to Humboldt Speedway for Austin O’Neal

PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting back to action with the ASCS National tour at Humboldt Speedway on Saturday night, Austin O’Neal had a rough ending to the night as he was collected in an accident in his heat race that left him with a torn-up racecar.

“If I didn’t have bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck,” a disappointed Austin O’Neal said. “It was my first time on a short track in quite some time after we made the decision to focus on half miles over the last year. We put ourselves behind after qualifying and our night got worse as we got collected in our heat and tore up a lot of parts.”

Timing in fifth fastest in his qualifying group aboard the Marmon/Keystone/Weld Racing/River Valley Ag backed No. 11, O’Neal was out of the inversion for his heat race and in the third row.

Needing to get a good start in his heat, the Kearney, MO driver went to the top when the green flag was displayed. Getting into the fluff, O’Neal had a big run on Matt Covington and Howard Moore as he looked to pick up a couple of valuable spots.

Keeping committed to the high side, with the car in front of him dipping to the bottom, a last second decision saw that car dart back to the top and with nowhere to go, and a full head of steam, contact ensued and resulted in a big wreck for O’Neal.

While he was okay, it left his car beat up and brought his night to a very early end.

“I had a good start and felt good on the top,” O’Neal said. “Unfortunately, the car in front of me decided to run the top at the last second, and I had nowhere to go and tore up a lot of equipment. It is disappointing and it will sideline us a little, but it is part of the sport. Thanks to everyone who supports our race team.”
