PETERSEN MEDIA- Traveling to the Ventura Raceway in scenic Ventura, CA, Richard Vander Weerd picked up an eighth place finish on Saturday night with the USAC/CRA Series.

“We didn’t time in well, and that put us behind the eight ball in the feature,” Vander Weerd said. “We had a good start of the race using the bottom, but once it went away it was pretty tough to pass with everyone up top.”

Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in 14th quickest during qualifying time trials, the Visalia, CA driver would battle with brother Jace during heat race action, as he would finish in the second position.

Lining up in the seventh row for the 30-lap feature event, Vander Weerd would get off to a nice start aboard his Mid Valley Pipe/Basic Industries/Factory Kahne Shocks entry as he utilized the bottom of the speedway.

Working his way into the Top-10, the bottom would start to go away and the preferred line would move up the track. Getting into the eighth spot, passing would slow down and become challenging, though Vander Weerd still worked on Guy Woodward who ran in the seventh spot just ahead of him.

Trying everything he could, Vander Weerd would not find a way around his competitor as he finished in the eighth spot.

“We were definitely good in the feature event and that showed early, but when it gets tough to pass on you basically just get in line and go and that’s what we did,” Vander Weerd said. “We have good speed right now in both cars, and hopefully we can get up front this weekend.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-8, Wins-1, Top 5’s-5, Top 10’s-6.

ON TAP: Richard is hoping to make his first winged start of the season on Friday night at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA, and will be back in action with the USAC West Coast 360’s on Saturday at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA.
