PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to action with the USAC/CRA Series after an early break in the schedule, Richard Vander Weerd continued to run well at the Perris Auto Speedway as he left with a fourth place finish on Saturday night.
“We had pretty good speed all night, and probably should have finished on the podium but I made a couple of late mistakes on the cushion and we fell back to fourth,” Richard Vander Weerd said.
Returning to the Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night, Vander Weerd opened his night up by timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in eighth fastest in qualifying time trials.
Racing his way to a heat race win, the Visalia, CA driver would line the Mid-Valley Pipe/Basic Industries/Factory Kahne Shocks backed entry up on the pole for the scheduled 30-lap feature event.
As the race came to life, Vander Weerd would mash the throttle and jump out to the early lead as he had the always tough, Damion Gardner giving chase in the early laps.
Leading the first nine circuits, Vander Weerd would give up control of the race as Gardner got by him on the 10th circuit. While in the second spot, Vander Weerd would not let Gardner get away as he hung right with the new leader looking for a way to get back to the point.
In the race’s closing laps, Vander Weerd would bobble on the cushion on a couple of occasions and it would allow Josh Hodges and Brody Roa to get by as he fell back to the fourth spot.
Trying to get back by Roa for the final spot on the podium, the checkered flag would waive on the race with Vander Weerd finishing in the fourth spot.
“It’s not fun to go backwards when you start on the front row, but we were pretty good and I just made a couple of costly mistakes,” he added. “I have to thank everyone who supports this team and works on this car for all they do.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-6, Wins-1, Top 5’s-4, Top 10’s-4.
ON TAP: Richard will be back in action with the USAC West Coast 360’s on Saturday night when they invade the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA.
