Tony Gomes Charges To Second Place Finish and Holds Points Lead Heading Into September Finale

PETERSEN MEDIA- Tony Gomes and the C&M Motorsports team moved one step closer to their first Placerville Speedway track championship on Saturday night as Gomes charged to a second-place finish in the feature event and kept his slim point lead with just one point event left on the schedule.

“After timing in poorly, I am really happy with how we rebounded and to come away with a second place finish is awesome,” Tony Gomes said. “Thankful that Cody and Bobby never gave up, and we ended up with a great night.”

Going out early in the qualifying session, Gomes timed the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7c in 14thfastest in qualifying time trials. Putting him in the second row of his heat race, the Modesto, CA driver did all he could to try and solidify himself a spot in the nightly redraw, but a second place finish was not enough.

Lining up 10th in the feature event, Gomes survived the several incidents on the initial start of the race. Once the green flag flew and the race finally got underway, Gomes worked his way into sixth.

On the slick surface, he ran in sixth for the first six laps of the race until he made a big-time move in turns three and four to advance from sixth to fourth. Getting strong with each passing lap, Gomes took over third on the 13th lap, and then was able to power his way into second with just three laps left in the feature event.

One final restart put Gomes on the rear bumper of race long leader, Justyn Cox, as he hoped to make a bid for another Placerville Speedway win. When the green lights were displayed, Cox nailed his restart and got away from Gomes. Though he made it as close as he could on the last lap, Gomes was able to add to his point total as he picked up a second place finish and finds himself atop the standings by three points heading into the finale next month.

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, MatriScope, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
