Tony Gomes Earns 360ci Bonus at Gold Cup Race of Champions
PETERSEN MEDIA- A last minute decision for Tony Gomes and the C&M Motorsports saw them enter the Gold Cup Race of Champions with their 360ci powerplant. Though taking on the highly touted High Limit Racing Series, Gomes proved to be up to the challenge and was rewarded in the end by earning the 360ci bonus as the highest finishing car using a 360ci engine in the event.
“It was a last-minute decision to run, and we went in with the mindset of winning the 360ci bonus and logging laps against some really good competition, and in the end we did just that,” Tony Gomes said. “Super thankful that Cody and Mandi believe in me enough to compete in such a prestigious race.”
Hitting the track on Friday night Gomes timed in 19th fastest in qualifying time trials and that put him on the front row of his heat race. When the action kicked off Gomes slipped back in the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7C entry but still held on to a transfer spot as he locked into the preliminary night feature event.
Gridding the field from the 18th starting position, Gomes held his own in the 30-lap finale and was even able to pick up a few positions along the way using the smaller power plant.
Working his way into the Top-15, Gomes capped the night off with a 14th place finish and that put him in the third row of a Saturday night qualifier. Finishing sixth in his qualifier, Gomes was locked into the fifth row of the ‘B’ Main as he lined up against some stout competition as everyone chased after the final 4 transfer spots into the Gold Cup feature event.
Though locked into the fifth row, Gomes and company made the decision to drop to the back of the field at the start of the race. Making business decision to keep their car in one piece as they are in the thick of a Track Championship battle, Gomes and company made a handful of laps before calling it a weekend.
“I felt really good despite having the 360 in, but it just made sense for us to do what we did after talking it over,” Gomes said. “Thanks to everyone for all of their help this weekend, and hopefully I can get back to Gold Cup with a 410ci under the hood.”
